Recover Data from Dynamic Disks

Hi,

I am looking to recover data from dynamic disks that were using a RAID config. On the server, the OS was installed on 2 striped 73GB SCSI disks, and the data was stored on a software striped 2 x 160GB SATA disks.

The AD and general config of the OS screwed up and we cant get access to the OS on the server (ie. it wont boot). I removed the data disks (noting exactly which ports they were plugged into etc) and put them on a fresh machine using XP pro SP2.

The disks in question are showing up as dynamic/foreign under disk management. If I try to import these foreign disks, according to MS all data will be lost. I need the data off these disk as its a whole companies files! They have no viable backups available, and all info is stored on these disks.

Has anyone any advice please? I have to completely rebuild this server today, but am reluctant to format the SCSI disks until I can get the data. Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

I recently had an 'issue' with my Hard Drive. Its a Samsung HD160JJ/P.

Essentially, what happened was that the Control Board blew up, but I re-soldered the components, and got it working.

The issue I now have is that when I put it back in my computer, Windows XP will not boot from the disc. The computer complains it can't see any media.

However, in a Hard Drive Caddy, the HDD works just fine, and I can use it just as anyone would with an external media source.

I have put the HDD backwards and forward from the Caddy (to see if its a one-off problem), and always works fine in the Caddy, but not the computer.

I am hoping/pretty sure its something relatively simple, like a file being deleted/corrupted, but I am not sure what to look for.

Can anyone help?

Cheers
Neil

Hello,

I have an 8GB USB, that I've had for a few years. Recently, I have found out that it can't copy large files, e.g. a single file like 500MB won't work. The copying window freezes, and eventually tells me the drive is unavailable. It appears the drive disconnects and reconnects itself, because the autorun window also pops up, with play media, view files etc. If I copy lots of little files at a time that amount to 500MB, it won't freeze. I've tried another computer, and its the same. I've formatted it a few times, with no fix. What I want to know is whether it is hardware damage or something fixable. USB is made by Imation if that helps. Oh it also freezes up other USB's if I'm using other USB's at the same time.

Thanks.

Setting Up Raid 0 with Back Up Drive on a Motherboard with 2 Sata Connectors

I recently ordered two 1T hard drives, a Seagate 7200.12 and a WD Caviar black.

I have an Asus P5VD2-MX motherboard which only has two Sata 1.5 connectors and 1 Jmicron connector.

I orginally canceled the order for the Seagate as I read some bad reviews which put me off, but the store sent it anyway so i'm now thinking of keeping it, which leaves me with 3 Hard Drives (including my original maxtor 200gb).

My question is considering I have two Sata 1.5 connectors and 1 Jmicron connector can I use all three hard drives?

What I want to do is set up raid 0 on the Seagate and WD Drives, and use the maxtor for backing up files (not part of the Raid).

Can I use the Jmicron connector as a normal Sata connector to attach my backup drive?

The only other option I have is to use the Jmicron connector for 1 drive, and the eSata connector for an external drive set up in Raid 0 which would allow the drives to run at the optimum 300gbs, but I don't want an external drive really.

Please help as I am new to all this but really want to get the best use out of my two new drives without having to buy a new motherboard.

Simpletech 320 GB External Hard Drive Dead!!

I have the 320 GB Simpletech (Hitachi) Signature mini Pininifarina external hard drive, bought in...

I have the 320 GB Simpletech (Hitachi) Signature mini Pininifarina external hard drive, bought in August 2009. Since then I have had the occasional minor glitch, such as when trying to unplug it from my laptop (Acer Aspire 5735, running Windows Vista Home Premium) I would get a message saying: “Cannot disconnect; ‘Generic Volume’ still in use”. And a couple of weeks ago the cable stopped working properly, but I found another to fit it and it has functioned perfectly well since then.
Then on Saturday night it suddenly stopped working properly. I was listening to music and the files suddenly wouldn’t open. It was late so I simply disconnected the hard drive, turned off my computer, and left it til morning. On Sunday morning, when I plugged my hard drive into my laptop, I heard the usual “du-du” sound Windows makes when you insert a USB device. But then nothing. No autoplay options, nothing detected in Windows Explorer. Hmm… Changing the cable, unplugging and re-plugging, restarting my computer, all did nothing. I tried it on a different computer; still nothing. The device is initially detected when I plug it in, but nothing further happens. Occasionally it does show up under ‘Computer management > Device management’. It has a little yellow exclamation mark, and a notification saying ‘This device cannot start’. If I click ‘Check for solutions’ Windows does a search and then tells me that the device driver is up to date, nothing more can be done. Crap.

On the hard drive itself, there is a red light to show connection and a blue light to show when it’s busy doing something. The red light illuminates and stays on constantly, but the blue flickers weakly once and then stays off. There is also a faint tapping sound from the hard drive, like a heartbeat. It ticks rhythmically 36 times (yes I have been dejectedly sitting here with my ear pressed to it), then makes a sound like a video being rewound for a few seconds, then starts another 36 clicks. It repeats this six or seven times, then sounds like it is spinning normally. But still nothing happens. Double crap.

Ok, so now I’m getting a little worried. That thing contains all my music and pictures, and some documents. I have a few bits and pieces backed up on my laptop, but the rest – ah! Not to worry, they’re on the family computer at home! (I should explain, I’m living in France at the moment, but originally from the UK) Quick phone call to my Dad – only to discover that in updating the home computer to Windows 7, they decided I obviously didn’t need my user account any more, cos I don’t live with them at the moment, and besides I have everything I need on my external hard drive; so they deleted it……………

Triple crap.

Ok so now I really need to get this Signature Mini working! I look around online, and a few forums suggest checking the BIOS – hmm, I’m not very computer-y minded so I’m not entirely sure how to change those, but as far as I can see it’s not that. Reinstalling the drivers – nope, that doesn’t work either. If I try to reinstall from scratch I get a little popup saying ‘Installing device drivers, click here for status’. The status scrolls for a little bit, installing… installing… still installing… failed. Quadruple.. well you get the idea by now.

As a last ditch attempt I followed the advice of several hundred people online saying “Omg this really works”, and put my hard drive (well wrapped) in the freezer. That was 5pm on Sunday; it is now midday on Monday and on getting my chilly hard drive out of the freezer I have found no change whatsoever.

Is there Anything, absolutely ANYTHING, that can be done??
Or am I just going to have to shell out on data recovery? I know that since my hard-drive is under a year old I can send it back to Simpletech, but they don’t do data recovery which is the vital part of my problem!

Sorry to blab on, guys, but I thought you should have as much detail as possible.

Please please help me :frown:

I have Vista btw!

Hi Everyone!
I am new to this forum, and am desperately in need of information, which I am sure is pretty basic to most of u. I had some files in a folder on my C drive, which I accidentally deleted, and emptied my recycle bin. Following this, I put some new files into the same folder, and while looking through the list, I realised that I had deleted a file that was important to me. The deleted file is about 130 MB, and the total file size that I transferred to the same folder after is around 250 MB. I suspect this would have corrupted the previously deleted file? Also, I have downloaded a few files onto my desktop, which I presume involves the C drive too? Could this cause a problem with file recovery?
I have downloaded a fair bit of stuff onto my E drive since. Can this effect retrieval of permanently deleted files from the C drive? Also, does watching videos on youtube etc copy links / temporary internet files onto the C drive, which could overwrite on the space created following permanent file deletion?

Please help!

I have a WD 1TB externall HDD and has worked fine with no problems consistently for a few months now. Last night I tried to power it on but it wouldn't. No light activity or any noises or anything. I've tried it on many sockets round the house and nothing.

Is this a power supply problem, internal problem, HDD problem?

And most importantly, should I be worrying?

I have an old unused PC. Can I use its HD as an external HD to be used for weekly/monthly backups? I think the old one has 40 GB capacity. I'd rather it had its own power supply, separate from my PC.
