Hey everyone! Well, I've finally made up my mind on building my 1st ever PC. I've been reading up a lot this weekend(random Tutorials, Wiki's, etc.), and I think I have a basic grasp so far of how to go about this, key word here being BASIC. :D

Getting straight to the point, my plans are to make this my Gaming rig, but an affordable one. Like the title mentions, my budget is around $800.

I already have an old PC that my friend built about 4-5 years ago, and hopefully I can scrounge up some parts from that. Concerning these old parts, I'm not actually certain what their specs are since it's been a long time since I thought about them. What I do remember is that the Sound Card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, the DVD/CD drive is a 300gb at 7200rpm I believe, but I'm not sure what interface it uses(SATA,PATA), I already have a 19" LCD monitor, a keyboard and mouse, and a Windows XP Pro OS(don't really need Vista). Oh and do you think I can still reuse my old case? It's this one:

Antec SLK1600 Mini Tower Antec SLK1600 Mini Tower

If I can reuse this one, I know I'll still need to buy a new PSU unit since this old one is only 300W. If I can't reuse this, any recommendations on a new case and PSU would be greatly appreciated. I don't need anything fancy.

Anyways, so far, I've picked out a few deals that I like that seem to go with my budget. What do you all think of these parts so far. I've just been looking at the "core" components at this point. None of these are final. Please let me know if I have any compatibility issues with these.

CPU & Mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HDX920XCGIBOX with BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX 128M AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

Video Card
EVGA 896-P3-1255-AR GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

Memory
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Anyways, yea, so that's what I have so far. Any and all advice/comments/recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again!

Pretty nice deal on that X4 but you don't need DDR2-1066 for overclocking it (e: actually after rebate looks like a good price so never mind)

GTX 260 216 on a 19" is a waste tbh, upgrade your monitor too.

This 260 is cheaper after rebate.

Good choices all around.

Thanks for the comments yall!

Carbon- what's the difference between the card I linked and your card besides the price? I know they're both GTX 260's so do they perform roughly the same? If so, then definitely thanks on the new deal!

BTW, I was siding with another card as well, this one to be precise:
SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870
What are your thoughts on this?

Oh and, any opinions no that Biostar Mobo in that combo deal? Is it reliable?
This is the 2nd Mobo I'm contemplating, but of course it's more expensive.
MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard

As far as the monitor goes, yea I know I need an upgrade, but I'm not picky at this point; I can just buy that in the future, but I'm more than happy with the 19".

The one I linked is factory overclocked another 100mhz, so it's actually quite a bit faster than your choice.

4870 is about the same as far as performance but obviously is more expensive, so I'd skip it.

I just noticed there's a combo deal that might be worth your while here with a much higher quality motherboard - BIOSTAR is definitely budget, and the gigabyte UD series are the highest quality midrange motherboards on the market. You'll lose a core but gain a bit of speed in non-multithreaded applications, have a better time overclocking (due to both the CPU and the motherboard), and with 790 boards you can reenable the extra core as well anytime you want. It also saves you $20 or so.

Hey yall, just wanted to update here as well. A few other peepz helped me out, and this is what I ended up buying. How's the final build look?

AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor
GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P
SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
Sunbeam Silent Storm
Rosewill RP550V2-D-SL 550W ATX12V v2.01 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready

Grand Total = $679.61! So it's even below my budget so yay!

Whew and now, time to read up on how to assemble all of this! 8)

The PSU is poor and will blow up. Try the 500W PC P&C Silencer.

Wait what? How will it blow up? It was recommended to me by a friend who has it, and says it works great, and plus it has over 286 5star reviews on Newegg......Please elaborate.

Rosewill's PSUs are bottom barrel units using poor components (mostly cheap capacitors). The reviews on NewEgg are that way because people review these units right after they get them. For the same price you can get a PSU that isn't trash for the same price.
