I bought an Acer Aspire 5610Z back in February this year which has from the get go periodically and intermittantly switched itself off.

It has been back to Acer 3 times for repair and they say they can't find the fault. Comet are refusing to do anything about it.

Has anyone else come across this behaviour and if so do they have any thoughts on what could be causing it?

Many thanks
Mike

I am really sorry you are having problems like this. Comet cannot wash their hands of it like that, they are the vendors and have a legal responsibility under the sale of goods act

http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/buyi.../page8600.html

Print it out and thrust it In their faces! Personally I will never trade with them again as they have a recklessness with regards to the law, returns, faults, etc.

Can you give any more information about shutdowns? Does Windows close down normally or does the power suddenly appear to fail? (Hard with a laptop as there is a battery there!)

You need to provide more information and perhaps we can help.

Hi,

Many thanks for those kind words. I am currently waiting for a call back from a supervisor at Comet Customer Services, but I am not holding my breath. I have just written a letter to them putting them on notice that unless I receive either my money back or a replacement unit by the 1/12/07 I will begin county court proceedings against them.

In terms of the problem - the laptop is plugged into an external power supply and has its battery installed. There is no discernable pattern - it appears to just switch itself off periodically with an ungraceful exit from the OS as when I restart it I get the usual message asking how I want to start windows. I am running Windows Vista with all available upgardes and fixes etc.

Accoriding to Acer they have cleaned it out, replaced the mother board, re-flashed and upgraded the BIOS and had it on soak test for 30 hours. I am however very doubtful about whether they have actually done anything.

So as you can see I am at the end of my teather and don't know what to do next.

Best regards
Mike
