Default Advice with fans

Hi all,

I have an Advent T9306 and am looking to upgrade the graphics card and psu. I'm looking at getting the Nvidia 8800 GT OC by BFG and I've heard that the overclocked cards especially can get very hot, so would it be advisable to get another fan? Just for peace of mind even though it might not be essential.

Also is there enough space inside for another fan? and which fans are recommended? (not bothered about all the flashy LEDs, just a good fan thats quiet!)

Thanks for any help

The fan on the card will be fine, it's when overclocking beyond the manufacturers spec you need to worry.

if it would put you more at ease, then perhaps an extra fan wouldn't hurt. your comp can never be too cold. :D

if you wanted to add a case fan, a good one to get is a 120mm scythe flex model fan. it's quite, and moves a LOT of air, and no pesky LEDs. but to be honest i have no idea if it can support another fan. usually there will be a vent somewhere without a fan placed there, or there will be a spot where you could hook one up. i think this is one of those things where you just have to look and see. if you see a spot where you can hook one up, then by all means.

otherwise, i'd suggest removing a crappier fan and replacing it with the one i suggested.

Thanks for the help, I think I'll go with the peace of mind option as I'm a bit of a worrier!

Also fairly unrelated, what do the symbols mean to the left of the thread title on the forum page? Most are green ticks, some are red '!' symbols, and this thread has what looks like a speech bubble and the thread title isn't bold like the rest! As a new member I'm unsure what these mean, any help?

Also, every now an again (usually during load periods) my computer fans go a bit crazy and I'm sure my computer is about to take off. My question is, which fan is making all the noise? Is it the psu fan or the system fan? From what I can see the system fan is Cooler Master and I don't know what the psu is, but its unlikely thats its a top tier make.

Thanks for any help

Unlikely to be the PSU. I'd open the case, run something like Intel's Thermal Analysis Tool with a "load CPU to x%" button, then see if you can figure out which one is spooling up. If your temperature in case is usually OK, you can disconnect the fan monitoring cable to the motherboard or disable automatic fan startup in your BIOS - it may be set to an absurdly low temperature like 40C.
