PC has suddenly started to make an alarm noise immediately after switching on.

Any ideas?

Could be a GFX card alarm, they do that when the are not getting the power they need. So, could be a faulty PSU. What else does or doesn't the PC do?

Well it's been doing it intermittently but for the last week but on Tuesday a blue screen appeared and said that it was restoring a lost file of some sort and then it started to work.
Yesterday evening (just b4 i put the message up on here) it made the noise again so I switched it off. Gave it a clean using compressed air (first time since June 2006) and plenty of dust came out!
turned it back on and it worked.
If it is the PCU?

So after the clean it's fine? Could be the GFX or CPU fan was blocked and heat was then up to alarm levels. If it is clean and working I shouldn't worry now.

Seems to be ok now. The PC setupsaid it is running on 'fail-safe' mode? I went to setup (by pressing DEL) and a blue screen came up. I selected save&exit and it loaded up fine and seems ok.
Also, the power lead (oops!) did not seem to be in fully (Dohh!). Hmm...I really need to learn more about the basics.
Thanks for all your help and advice.

That would have definitely caused the alarm, glad it's sorted.

Problem's back again. there is a red light showing at the rear left hand corner of pc. I will turn off, open up and make sure all cards are secure in slots and sockets are in properly. If not, will i need a new pcu?

I may have found it. The red light on the motherboard suggests there's a problem with a fan ("aux fan 1 system"). The fan in the power unit isn't working.

Is a new PCU required or can it be fixed?

If you mean the PSU fan failed, it's new PSU time, it's not worth potentially electrocuting yourself to replace a fan. If this is a bare-bones kind of system with no graphics card it should be pretty trivial budget-wise to pick up a cheap Seasonic or something.

It is the PCU fan. The model is a Thermalake Pure Power 480 APD, 480w Butterfly.
