Hello Friends,

Just built a new system and am having the same hang-up problem.

Any here is the stats of my system:
DFI LP UT-X58-T3eH8
i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz Processo
6GB OCZ Platinum DDR3-1600 8-7-7-24 1T 1.65v (load)
EVGA GTX 260 Nvidia
1TB Seagate
CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V
Cooler Master HAF932 High Air Flow Full Tower
Pioneer DVR 2910 DVD-RW
Dell Ultra Sharp 2209WA
Windows Vista 64 Ultimate SP1

Problem: All USB Devices without independent power supply hangs my system or make the system run very slow...ie...when plug in one of these devices, and tried to access "Computer", that turning circle will keep running indefinitely (seems like), then I have to manually power off the system to get it out of that hanged state.

NOTE: USB devices that have their own power suply don't cause this problem.

What tried so far: downloaded bios from DFI and installed it, still no resolution.

Thinking about getting the latest drivers from the same place and see if that will resolve the issue.

Any help would be much appreciated. This thing stalls me from doing some of the things I really like to do with the system. Please help.

For those of you who manage to get your hanged system resolve, please share some step by step as to how you were able to resolve the problem.

Best regards and TIA.

A bit more info :

What USB devices are they ? and how many USB devices are connected when the problem occurs ?

Are you using the USB Ports on the front of your case ? ... if so have you tried using just the rear ports ?

Has this just started happening or has it always been an issue ?

philthomas, thanks.

What USB devices are they ? and how many USB devices are connected when the problem occurs ?
USB Flash drive, 2.5" external enclosure USB drives, and multicard reader drives

Are you using the USB Ports on the front of your case ? ... if so have you tried using just the rear ports ?

Its the USB Ports in the front panel that's causing the hang up. The ones onboard in the rear panel works flawlessly.

Has this just started happening or has it always been an issue ?
This is a brand new home build system and just barely got the system together. But from the start, its been the problem.

Any other questions, thoughts, recommendations, please shoot my way.

Best regards

It seems to be a commom problem that the front USB ports are troublesome. These are often connected from the mobo, using inferior cables and often have problems delivering power. There can also be bandwidth issues.

My current system suffers this way .... if I try to plug in an iPod to the front sockets.

The only workarounds that I know of are ..... to either use the rear ports, use a powerd USB2 Hub, or install a PCI USB2 Card.

Can you please expand on the "bandwidth issues", please.

Darn it, with such expensive tower, that shouldn't be the case. Will have to exchange it. Hopefully, a new one will resolve the issue? What do you think?

This page explains things better than I can (see page 8)

Personally I dislike the USB2 interface, it's way too flaky for my liking.
It's a handy universal way of connecting peripherals, but for devices requiring power or high bandwidth, it can be troublesome.

I dont think chucking money at it will help .... it's the interface itself that is the problem.
I have seen the same problem on many PCs, especially when using the front ports. The only workarounds I have found are those mentioned above ... i .e. : either use the rear ports, use a powerd USB2 Hub, or install a PCI USB2 Card.

Thank you very much.

After reading that linked info, thinks make alot of sense as to what you referred to. These cables from the front pannel, as you previously said, aren't the best. So I wonder why manufacturer would risk their reputation for a simple fix like this....sigh...

Might as well just get the hub as you recommended...though can't help thinking that you purchased as expensive item and have it not working as it supposed to. Aweful.

Appreciate your thoughts and recommendations on this.
Best regards
