G'day to everyone out there.
I'm new to the forum and have limited knowledge of computers, so I'll probably be asking some really dumb questions. My first question is regarding a used computer I just bought. It's an Ipex Pentium 4 CPU 3.2GHz with 1G RAM. Nothing flash but better than the one I'm using now. It came without an OS. I intend to load Ubuntu onto it to trial a Linux system. So here is my first dilemma: When I plug my monitor in (17" CRT with power connected) and start the PC nothing appears on the screen. There are two ports the monitor plug will fit in on the back of the PC and I've tried both. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Regards, PCdummy |

well, does the monitor work ? and tbh I won't get a used PC unless you was getting it off someone you known. Also that not a dumb question :D

If everything is connected properly and the machine powers on but then nothing onscreen at all it normally points to a hardware fault, typically power supply or motherboard.

I would, as a user of a Pentium 4 3.2GHz with 1Gb of RAM I'll have you know it runs most applications today pretty poorly. Despite the high clock speed and HyperThreading its not a great processor. Look for an inexpensive (not cheap, you want quality) dual core system. Even a 2GHz system will out do a Pentium 4 in spite of the Pentium having a "4.8GHz" clock speed. Plus, the new hardware is guaranteed and has no wear so you'll get maximum performance. AMD systems are pretty cheap these days.

Thanks Razer, yeah you're right. Every computer I've bought has been used - I probably should just spend a bit more and buy something decent.
Thanks for the advice. |

If you buy online these days you can get some real bargains on new stuff.

Yeah, look online on reputable sites. MicroDirect, Ebuyer, and Play.com give a lot of good offers.
If you look in the right places you can probably get a decent 19" monitor thrown in too, if you buy a system. Building is always an option! |
