Building a "cheap" server? What do I need? Ok, I'm picking up literally a truck load of computer parts this evening. Nothing real new, but nothing real old. There aren't any processors under 3 ghz. But I BELIEVE the fastest cpu's in the lot are AMD 3600+ (supposed to be a couple of them in the lot somewhere. There's a bunch of 250 gb SATA hard drives, and a bunch of motherboards compatible with the 3+ GHz cpu's. Naturally, there are also all the rest of the parts to go with it.... Power supplies, cases, DVD LightScribe burners, fans, card readers, etc, etc, etc.
Anyways, with the aquisition of about 2 pick-up truck loads of parts, I figured it might be fun to build a server. Now this is something I've never even thought of before, so know nothing about. I'm not big into gaming, but was thinking maybe I might get into world of warcraft, or America's army, or something to pass the time.
What kind of hardware should I be putting into a server pc? Do I need lots of HD space? Cuz I could run 4 250 gb SATAs no problem. Obviously, I'm thinking a 3600+ cpu. What about RAM? Would 2 gb be enough? Or do I have to build on a MoBo that will handle 4 gb? If I'll require more than 1 hard drive, how do I set those up? Does a server PC require a video card? Or is onboard sufficient?
Any tips or "how to's" on building a server would be appreciated. I really think I just wanna build it.... try it..... and if it works well, then I can say that I build a "nice little server". lol. Then I'll probably tear it all apart again after that..... knowing me.
Thanks. |
