building computer - comonent list help

I am planning on building my own computer system, and have no idea as to the parts i need. Id like the computer to be quick, and suitable for gaming etc. Could anyone suggest a list for me, i am looking to have a 500gb hard drive and 3.2ghx processor.

any help would be appreciated.

Have you a preference on size? Some people like full-size towers that take the same space as a filing cabinet, others prefer a Shuttle. If you're planning to build your own then you're eliminating the possibility of a laptop.

Have you a preferred operating system? What is it? Why?

Do you need internet access? What choice of internet access does your street offer?

building computer - comonent list help

i prefer windows Xp, as i used to using that. I have considered using Vista, however have heard bad things. i would like Internet access, this would be a second computer in my house, and will probably use wireless. As far as size goes, i dont want to have to sacrifice a full rom for the system, just a normal sized tower is fine. i was thinking of 500gb hard drive and 2gb DDR, with a 3.2 gig processor. howerver that is as far as my knowledge goes. things such as motherboard, graphics/sound cards etc are new to me.
That is why id like a list of components, that way i can get them and build. i do have help on the matter, i have friends that build computers, but would prefer other advice as to what to buy.

Many Thanks
