Default can a hard drive and cd drive share an ide cable?

Hello all, can a hard drive and cd drive share an ide cable?

I am running out of plugs and want to know if they can share?

Yes they can. It is however better to have them on separate cables.

Yes, as long as the hard drive is setup to be the Master, and the CD-Rom/CD-RW drive is setup to be the Slave.

Yes, you will need a cable like the one in the image below;
http://www.gotogeek.com/mobopics/idecable.jpg

One side will be connected to the IDE slot on the Motherboard, and two other sides one with the hard disk and CD.To get them working to should change the Jumper setting for both the hard disk and CD as Master and Slave.

Edit:
Bad link repaired.
