Hi, for the last few days my cdrom keeps moving in and out by itself. I am wondering if I may need to install an updated driver, but not sure what I need. I have a dell dimension 2400 and is 5 years old, always been very reliable though and this has never happened before. Please can you offer your advice thanks.

Drives will re-open if they cannot close properly or could be a sensor or something, so based on being 5 years old I would point at it being faulty. You can replace it for around 15 quid.

Can I buy one relatively cheaply and install it myself, does it have to be a dell 2400 cdrom make?

They are pretty easy to install, i'm sure there are videos on youtube detailing how to do it.

Yes any PC cd-rom make will work, will need to be the same type as your current one.

Remove that and post a pic of the rear connectors and i can advise you of what to buy.

A Dell Dimension 2400 Only uses IDE connections. Your looking for a Black IDE DVD drive then.

Try looking at these on ARIA. They're about £15, that's if you want to replace it.

The specs are fine, but why bother with a refurbished unit, which may have problems, when, as xactly said, you can get a new one for £15 with 12 months warranty ..... not a wise buy imo

I purchased a drive from ebay, but it was the wrong type. I have a clear image of the back connection. Please can you advise how I can upload image, I do not know how to upload via address only.

    Copy, paste. Simples.

But as xactly says, its an IDE drive you want.

I don't have an address for my image. Normally the browse link appears so an image can be uploaded. Furthermore, I purchased an ide drive, went to fit it and all the connections were wrong.

I have enclosed an image of the back of the drive. Pleas can you advise what type need to buy. I have already purchased an ide 48x, but the connections at the back were different so could not be fitted.

That is definitely an IDE (ATA) Drive

Can you show a pic of the one that doesn't fit

What connection(s) are different/do not fit ... the ribbon cable , the power cable or both ?

I have already tried to upload a photo via photobucket, but still am unable to properly display image. There is a host of connections via back of drive but two main wires connected. One is a wide strip connection and the other is a short/smaller plug in connection. Sorry, I can't be more specific. I have a very clear image. Is there a way I can send it to you via email attachment. I have got so fed up with the drive moving in and out all day that I have now disconnected it.
