Default Compaq Presario S4000V - Freezing / Crashing - Need some help

lol, since I am was unable to find how to start a thread of my own, I was hoping to ask for help from the experience people on this site.
I have recently come across a problem with a Compaq Presario S4000V and have been unable to resolve it, (its been about 2 months.)
Out of no where, the computer has started freezing, although it mainly freezes when running internet explorer it has on a few rare occasions froze on other programs. I have already tried many things. Here they are in order:
1) Unistalling, Reinstalling IE. (and also upgrading to IE)
2) Searching for Trojans, Viruses, Spyware etc. (found none)
3) Reseeding memory cards.
4) Installation of new 512 MB memory.

when none of these work, I started to think the problem was with the hard drive, so I:
1) System Restore
2) Ran diskchk and tried to repair bad sectors.
3) After running the disk check, I thought the hard drive might just have physical damage that was un repairable so I replace it with a new one. (did not work)
4) So after running a system restore to the earliest point and having no luck I had no choice but to reinstall Windows XP. It did not help.

I am starting to believe now that it is something to do with the motherboard which I am less experienced on. Has anyone ever had, read, or heard about this problem? I am a more than willing to try any suggest, or if someone has resolved this problem before with a step I mentioned above I would be more than happy to know in more detail how you did it, in case I did something wrong.

Thanks alot,
Sam

If I recall correctly, this PC came with a very low rated PSU (200W I believe), so it could be a power issue.
As you seem to have tried most things already and if you are certain you installed the correct Ram, this would be a logical next step.

The only issue here is Compaq, together with many other Manufacturers, did not use the ATX Standard on the power connectors on some of their motherboards, the S4000V included, so you will need to be certain that you obtain a compatible unit. This company and This company seem to stock a suitable unit, but I am in the UK, so cannot vouch for them obviously. Maybe someone from your side of the pond can recommend someone.
