I am about to purchase a gaming computer for sub £500. I have no idea of specs really so would like some advice on which one I should get.
The choices are:
1).
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.66GHz

Intel Approved CPU Cooler

Akasa Genesis AK-5004 Midi Tower Case

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel

Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L Intel G41 Motherboard

LG GH22NS30 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter

Corsair CX 400W ATX Power Supply

2).

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.66GHz

Intel Approved CPU Cooler

Corsair CX 400W ATX Power Supply

Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Coolermaster Elite 334 Midi Case

LG GH22NS40 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter

Palit GeForce GTS 250 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L Intel G41 Motherboard

Which ever my choice is will be played on a 22" monitor.

Many thanks for your time people, I look forward to peoples comments.

Former's a better machine, but keep in mind even the cheapest AMD Athlon II smokes the E5300 at the low-end.

What do you mean by "Formers a better machine"?

Also I am an Intel person and don't like AMD machines too much. My last one was AMD and didnt perform as well.

If you want to get less for your money, at least you've been warned. Brands mean nothing - the fact that it's "AMD" has nothing to do with its performance or any other characteristic. Intel owns the high-end but AMD's processors destroy the E5300.

The first machine is better, primarily because of the graphics card.

Even though I can overclock the intel processor quite a bit?

Do you think I would still make sub £500 though getting an AMD?

The Intel processor will overclock pretty well, yes. Nowadays a lot of CPUs overclock extremely well, though, so I wouldn't make that your primary consideration - pretty much everything from both Intel and AMD is easy to squeeze a lot of extra power out of.

The AMD system is likely to end up being slightly cheaper, actually, if you stick to a dualcore. An X2 240 is $10-$20 cheaper here in the states, and a good motherboard is $20-$30 cheaper too. I assume it's similar in the UK as well. Also I assumed these were prebuilt options: if you're building these from parts, I have a feeling you might want to sub that AK-5004 out for either the case in your second build or a Centurion 5/590.

Here are some gaming benchmark if you want to check them out. The E5300 is only 100mhz faster than the E5200, so the E5200 compared there should perform about the same as your E5300.

If you are buying pre built, combine all your overclocking thoughts and methods and chuck them off a cliff. You won't be able to overclock a pre-built PC unless it's a shop that buys parts then charges £xxx to stick them together. You are better off building your own, saves money, better performance, everyone goes home happy.

Good catch, most Dell etc systems have locked down BIOSes.

Just so everyone is aware this is a pre built computer.
To razer... I didnt know you couldnt overclock a pre built computer so thanks for that information I was miss informed by someone.
Also listening to Carbons advice I have looked at a AMD machine because it is about £30 cheaper but this is for the AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 not the 240. Does the below mean it is a bad machine.

Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P nForce 430 PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz

Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Corsair CX 400W ATX Silent Power Supply

Palit GeForce GTS 250 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card

LG GH22NS40 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter

Akasa Genesis AK-5004 Midi Tower Case

I am aware that the case is sub standard really for cooling reasons so this is something I am going to change a few months after I get the machine.
Will this run better than the above?

Thanks for the advice so far.

The motherboard is an older chipset which is terrible!

What will the PC be used for?

Some Pre-built PCs can be overclocked but some can't it depends which motherboard the manufacturer uses.
