Default Computer does switch off but freezes!!

Hi Guys

Up until now my computer was swtiching off properley, as I used to go on start, turn off computer. But recently when I do this it starts switching off, but right until the very end just before it goes off it freezes, thus I have to switch it off from the mains. I don't like the idea off doing this as I have been told if I keep doing this it could corrupt the drive, that is why the turn off button is there. I have no choice other then to do this.

I am using windows xp home, and i have and average 512 mb ram, 1.7 processor, and an 80 gig hard drive. I have tried the power button options, but don't know what I am really doing.

Please help. Thanks ash

I definitely wouldn't leave it on frozen.

Chances are it's overheating, clean the fans.

A friend once had a similar problem, apparently it was a corrupt program that would not shut down ( access denied ) Thus forcing the shutdown to try, but it never worked.

Upon figuring out what it was he reinstalled and problem fixed.

Try manually turning off programs in the taskbar and program bar if you can.

worked for me when i had a similar problem, a program would shutdown in 5,4,3,2,1, and start over again never shutting down, i left it over night, woke up and found it fixed itself.
