Default computer freezes every few minutes

When I am working on my PC offline, the computer freezes for about 3 seconds every few minutes. When I go online, the problem becomes much worse. The computer sometimes locks up for up to 3-5 minutes at a time when I am just downloading a webpage (I usually run firefox with images disabled, but with javascript enabled). Either if I disable javascript, the problem is still sometimes there. I have windows live update set to manual (but is disabled) so that is not the problem. I open task manager to see what the culprit is. However, the TM shows that cpu usage fluctuates only between 9 and 25%, but the commit charge is 100% committed, but none of the programs shown in TM appear to be responsible. What could be the problem? Is it a virus, adware, or some other program's auto-update function? (I suspect adobe) I've run norton and spybot, but the problem still remains. Can someone advise what I should look for? How to check what the problem could be? Thank you.

I had a similar problem quite recently. What Anti-Virus software do you have?

Might be worth if your computer lets you, running an online virus scanner, they're quite quick and usually accurate.

Have you de-fraged the hard-drive recently?

What eventually sorted mine out was a combination of clean-up programs to get rid of all the crap that found its way onto my PC.
