Default Computer hanging

hey, im new to this site . . .i geuss im ok with computers but i need some help with this one. ok whenever i start my computer it asks me which windows xp to start up ( i have two windows xps installed) i choose the right one (one of them is sort of corrupted, and i will soon delete it) then i log in with my user name. sometimes it just hangs on the "loading you personal settings" screen and sometimes its starts up and hangs. when it hangs i can still move the mouse but i cant do anything. i can make rectangles on the desktop and i can click on desktop icons so that they're highlighted, but when i double click to open them , nothing works. i start uop the computyer and leave it for 20minutes or so for it to load, and the same thing keeps happening. i have two anti viruses installed : ESET smart security and Norton Anti virus 2006, which came with the computer. could they be conflicting ? if they could be, can they be causing this sort of problem ? imight be worth saying that itwas working just fine right until i ran the disk that reinstalled everything that came with the computer, including norton. after that it kept hanging. so . . .anyone have some suggestions? i can get into safe mode, but im notsure if i can use the add or remove programs thing to delete norton . . .if i cant should i simply manually remove it by deleting the folder in program files , as well as deleting all the shortcuts? any help appreciated.

Windows XP home edition
Ram : 1.5 GB
Video card: 128mb intel
processor: 1.7 GHZ

The usual reason for a OS login hang is due to a corrupt user configuration. One way I found to fix that would be to create a new administrator user then delete the old administrator user account. It also sounds like a registry error may have occurred. If its not too much trouble I would just reformat the partition to get rid of all errors and just reinstall the operating system. Either that or find some windows washer type program or registry cleaner program and run that. Also having two virus programs or two firewalls usually does cause very weird side-effects on a computer as the two attempt to gain control over the other.
