Hi,
well I'll start from the beginning...my computer was getting stuck/freezing at the windows login screen so I decided to have a look inside and found the CPU fan covered in dust. Now since my computer often overheats I decided to take out the CPU Fan and take out all the dust on it. However when I took it out it also took out the CPU. In short the CPU had many of its pins bended (which I had to straighten out) and I had to buy new Thermal Paste/grease/compound. I also decided to get a new CPU fan. When I put it all back together the computer turned on and was on the windows login screen loading up and then I smelled something burning and the computer turned off. Current situation I bought new Thermal paste ( I was using the one that came with the CPU fan before) and tried again. This time to computer would turn on, the fans would too. Thats about all my computer does now. Nothing shows up on the screen, the disk drives don't open and when I press the power button to turn the computer off it won't turn off. I have at this point no idea what to do next any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you, Juan |

possibly something wrong with the motherboard if it wont turn off or the powersupply , can you source the smell of the burning?

Sounds like you cooked the CPU, probably because the fan wasn't put back on properly after you cleaned it.

Is there a way to figure out whether it was the mother board or the CPU that got fried? The mother board as a little light on it that turns on thats all.
Also I could not tell where the smell came from. |

This might be it since when I bought the new fan it came with some sort of ( I thought) thermal paste underneath it to go with the CPU and I accidentally rubbed some off but tried it anyways. Thats right before it gave the burn smell.

It is likely to be the cause as that is all you removed from the machine.
You did right as dust will cause a PC to overheat but by not putting the fan back correctly the CPU overheated to a point where it burns. You will need a new CPU. |
