I took apart my nan's old 98 machine, to put the hard drive into my current 98, and now whenever I turn it on, it beeps at me. The beep is long- 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off. I'm not sure what the problem is, can someone help me? Thanks.

| beeps are different for all motherboards, what motherboard do you have? Do you have a manual for your motherboard? it will say in there if you do. Otherwise we could help you by looking on the internet, however can only be 100% certain what it means if we know what motherboard you have.

I found the manual for the motherboard. It says it's for 7BXAS/7BXAN/7ZXAS/7ZXAN. I've checked the image in the book against my motherboard and it matches. What should I look for in the book? Under which heading would I find instructions about it beeping?

The hard drive worked fine in my nan's machine. I decided to transfer it to my machine so I could have a hard drive to experiment with Linux(might as well experiment on an old machine and make mistakes on it now, then make the same mistakes later on a better machine :) I'll have a read through the motherboard's manual.

If you are hooking it up to your PC on the same IDE cable, alongside your existing drive, did you change the jumper to Slave ? ... assuming it's an IDE drive.

The computer is now working, the beeping was caused by the RAM. I just had the wrong kind inserted. However the machine only recognises one hard drive. How do you change the jumper to slave?

The settings vary from drive to drive, but there should be a key on the drive itself .... if not give us the make & model of the drive and we can check it out for you. The jumper is a small plastic/metal bridge which is used across the pins, as per the key above. Here's an example of what you are looking for :
