Hello,

Two days ago my computer restarted on its own, and then it happened again tonight. The only specifics I can give thus far is that the system freezes for 1 second, then restarts. No blue screen. I only notice it freezes because my music keeps repeating the last note for 1 second, then, boom, restart. What might it be, or how might I start narrowing down the issue?

Thanks,
Andrew

Overheat, PSU, bad overclock, bad memory.

Well, I haven't changed anything in years, so does that suggest which of those things it might be?

Clean your CPU fan of dust, sounds like overheating as Carbon said.

I actually got a BSOD for the first time just now, and snapped a photo of it with my digital camera:

Any clues from that?

I also carefully vacuumed the inside of the computer tower using one of those long, thin extension heads.

If the cleaning didn't help, try removing a stick of Ram (assuming more than one is fitted), running with just one .... if no better swap them over

I assume you have already tried booting to "Last Known Good Configuration" in Safe Mode ?

Might be worth trying a "System Restore, back to before this started.

Some Microsoft suggestions (including XP Repair) here

The RAM sticks haven't been changed in over a year, so I assume that would mean it isn't that?

I haven't had to use Safe Mode, and I can boot just fine, I just got an unwanted restart twice, and a BSOD once, so far.

Should I try a System Restore, maybe, for about 1 week ago?

Ram can go bad at any time, so the fact that it workded ok yesterday, doesn't exclude it .

Try a System Restore first though and see if that helps.

Okay, I made a new restore point and then chose to restore to 2 weeks ago. I'll let you know if the problems continue.

I actually got the same BSOD upon restarting the system for restoring the system to 2 weeks ago. And then when the system rebooted correctly, a message told me that it couldn't restore it to 2 weeks ago because there weren't any changes made. I'm assuming that's not the proper path to follow then?
