| Right, I'm confused on what I should do when opening my PC tower. My lecturer on my IT course said when I open the PC I should ground myself using either an anti-static wrist band or by holding the side of the PC(?) In order not to die from some horrific death and damage the equipment. My uncle however, just switches it off at the main, opens the tower and just gets stuck right in with what he's supposed to do, without even thinking about consequences. Do I only need to ground myself if the PC's connected to the main's or do I do it all the time. Is my uncle crazy or is he playing it safe. Can someone please tell me the proper way to handle the inside of a PC without dying or ruining the equipment. It would be great if someone could help pl0x |

Your best bet is too unplug the cable from the PSU and use an anti static wristband. Although there is no risk of killing yourself the RAM etc is still going to be holding a slight charge and you may also have static on you that can damage the components. My System: Custom Built v1.2

| your uncle isnt in any real danger other than an "ouch" however his pc can be, when i open my tower i always discharge myself. maybe im weird but my tower was quite expensive and i dont plan to ruin it more than it already has been. an anti static wristband isnt 100% necessary but if you are working with an expensive machine its well worth it. accidents happen and time doesnt heal computers. |
