I am having an ongoing problem with my PC suddenly shutting down for no apparent reason. It usually happens when I am running a video conversion program (e.g., avi to mp4; DVD Shrink). At first I thought it was one of my hard drives overheating, so I had the operating system moved to the IDE drive from one of the SATA drives and upgraded the fans. However, the problem is continuing. Disk Sentinel tells me the disks are all fine, and I replaced my video card just a few months ago. I am running Windows XP Pro on an AMD Dual Core 4200+ with 2 megs of RAM. I have three internal disks and one external disk.
Thanks!!

Video work is CPU intensive, there is no mention or cleaning or replacing your CPU fan.

Could also get some temp software and watch it as you start and run the software you are using. My System: Hybr!d

I actually thought it might be an overheating CPU, but my local computer shop guy says no. What kind of temp software would you recommend?
Thanks! |

Really? Freezing/Locking and straight shutting off is almost always CPU temps.

Yes, if it's not CPU it's PSU. Check your CPU fan, if it's that it won't cost you a cent, otherwise pick up a new power supply from a reputable brand.

I think I've come to the conclusion that it's probably the CPU overheating. One thing I didn't mention: I installed a new CPU (upgraded from a 3400+ to a 4200) but I didn't upgrade the CPU fan. Although did a lot of research before I installed it, I wonder if I (a) did it right, or (b) should have also upgraded the sink fan. I think I will take it in & have them check the installation & replace the sink fan. I may also have them upgrade the PSU ... it certainly won't hurt!
Sound like a good idea?? Many Thanks!! |

Aye, sounds like a good idea. Uprated PSUs and CPU fans are never a bad idea.
Try to go for brand names for both, cheap brands never last and can cause damage to other higher price components when they give up. |
