Ok, well thanks to the help I got previously (thanks guys!) I had my desktop working.
For a while...

Yesterday, while it was running in XP it switched off and then refused to turn back on.

I switched power plugs and tried going down to the minimum number of peripherals
and nothing happened. So I replaced the power supply with a brand new one and still nothing happened.

When I press the power button, I get no sign of power at all. No fans on the PSU, no lights anywhere. Nothing.

I'm thinking this means it's a Motherboard problem, but that's going to be expensive (for me) so I want to be sure before I go out and spend even more money on my computer. So frustrating! :(

Thanks.

it probably will mean getting a new motherboard but have you checked the cable that goes from the on-switch to the motherboard and the cable which goes from the power supply unit to the motherboard?

Yeah, I checked both those cables as I had access to ones from a working PC thanks to a mate.

It's turned into a bit of an epic mess. What started out as just replacing a couple of drives has ended up in essentially having to purchase a new computer. Not what I planned
at all.

Thanks muchly. Fingers crossed tomorrows rebuild goes smoothly.
