Default computer upgrade

hi i`ve just joined the site this evening so hi to everyone on here.
i`am really a novice when it comes to computers but i did have to self teach myself when i first got my computer.
i recently bought myself a laptop which is now faster than my main computer so i would like to upgrade my computer because i find it very slow but iam unsure if this can be done.
computer spec

emachine 4210
280ghz
80 gb hard drive
512mb

if possible could someone explain if this can be upgraded to be much faster.

E-machines are cheaply made pieces of rubbish with shoddy components.

Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh but it is the truth.

The best option would be to replace it really.

It can be upgraded a bit but it would be throwing good money after bad.
For example, if you make too many hardware changes the recovery cd wont work.
If you change the mobo (motherboard) the recovery cd wont work, even if its a different e-machine one.
The psu (power supply unit) is of a very low quality indeed and has a habit of blowing and damaging the mobo too. It does this on a standard machine, imagine what it will do after a more power hungry upgrade!!

E-machines will not issue a new recovery cd unless you pay loads for it, and even then, it may not work.

I rest my case.

I dont like mass produced junk like this any more than you do.
But if the guy wants to spend a few quid, add some extra memory or a graphics card he should be given advice.
There is no point in consigning a working PC to the bin when(depending on your needs)a small amount of money could extend its useful lifespan.
