Just saw this on Dell's site. On an XPS build.

If you upgrade the cpu (from an E6320).

Need there ever be another example of why you shouldn't upgrade a build when you buy from Dell?.....

Intel® Core™ 2 Quad-Core QX6700 Extreme Processor (2.66GHz,1066MHz,8MB cache) [add £1,034.00 or £26/month1]

This cpu, by itself, from an E-tailer costs around 600.00.

Oh dear.

Now this one from Vadim. The core numbers are the same (cpu, amount of ram etc as I've tried to keep the build the same as the Dell for a, more or less, direct comparison). More fans, your own components (and good one's at that), given the choice to overclock should you want to. And it's not the dumb BTX format, so if something 'goes' you can swap it out with mainstream items, not pay through the nose for a replacement from Dell (Mobo, hsf etc)

The moral of this thread? Don't buy a gaming machine from Dell. Don't upgrade any component on a Dell build. In fact, just don't buy from Dell full stop.

Actually, the case quoted in the Vadim build isn't ideal, but you get the idea.

dell are hopeless for everything but laptops and monitors. Even there 24" widescreens have been superceded by the new samsung range. Yet the poor non technically illiterates of the worlds will still be conned by the this terrible corporation.

It does upset me somewhat when these things happen.

They make money by offering crap 'computing solutions' to the masses.

Although im not free from blame, when my mum had a new computer system at work we purchased from Dell. I did offer to build the systems myself, but my mum just wanted them to arrive ready built. Never mind.
