Yea, some of that isn't too great.

I very much doubt you need a quad core, and as your only running an 8800GT you can't being doing stuff too intensive, go for a duel.

CPU cooler: There are better ones than the zalman, I've actually seen some pretty poor reviews for quite a few Zalman coolers. If your interested in no/moderate OCing go for the Xigmatek HDT-S1283, if you are planning on serious OC, for a start you want a duel core, then you want something like the Noctua NH-U12P.

PSU: Not the best, go for a corasir 550W unit.

GFX card: personally I would want to go for an ATI 4850, they only cost a little more, but will be alot better.

They are the main parts to what you can inprove, but like Carbon said, take another look at the stick, it's a very good guide.

Oh ok understand now.

My reason for limited card and quad core is that I don't game (on my pc) but I do a hell of a lot of wuite demanding stuff all at the same time, but not necessarily particularly good-graphics-card-needing.

I'll have a look at some of the reccomendations, thanks.

Fordy,

I don't want to tell you you have wasted a lot of time speccing this build out.... but you really have. I wish someone had told you 4 pages ago that you were going along the wrong track.

First off, eleven different suppliers!! You're going to be spending a fortune on shipping, and you have eleven times the chance of something getting lost, not tuning up etc etc etc. Really, try to stick to one or two suppliers, even if just for conveniences sake.

The quad core is a personal choice, but I'd rather have an E8400 any day.

The PSU is crap.

The motherboard is old tech.

Neither hard drives are much cop to be honest.

Case is fine.

Cooler is not much good.

Graphics card is old.

RAM is ridiculously expensive.

With all that out the way, I really really suggest you go and read some hardware stickies. Then try again.

Also, whichever company was offering to build this for over £800 should not be in business. It is certainly not worth £800, and would not perform like it was worth £800.

£800 can buy you a really good rig if you do the homework.

Serverguy is correct on all counts - there are a lot of problems, some of which will not only make performance quite unsatisfactory but cause you massive headaches when trying to get all those parts on time..or even at all.

Especially when it's such a good thread Carbon.

Fordy: I thought I had linked this for you, must have been one of the other threads. What they are talking about is Carbons Computer parts guide thread. Check it out, it's awesome:

Carbons thread starts with this note:

"Another note: This is a gamer-oriented guide."

I'll now quote myself, earlier in this thread.

Serverguy, the motherboard is the same one I currently have, my only reason for not carrying it over between PCs is that I will sell my current one, when I have the new one done.

It's fine for, me if you game heavily, or even at all I'm sure its a load of...

But for what I do, I have no problems.

The graphics card is good enough. I don't game.
It's a damn site better than my current one, which is nearly perfect (for what I do) as long as it supports HD, TBH, im not bothered.

I can't remember what other parts you criticised, but you get my general flow.

If you can honestly reply saying it's no good if I'm not gaming with it, then fine, I'll spend my 5 hours crawling through the web again.

I completely understand what you say.

But what I am saying is that we can definitely still do better. Considering you're not into gaming, you don't need a super high end graphics card, but you say you use CPU guzzling programs. I think with the money saved on the graphics, you should be able to get 8 Gigs of RAM and a better quad core process, and a better motherboard etc etc. Do you get what I mean now?

Tonight I'll spec you up a really decent rig that you can have a look over and see if it would suit you better.

As for the motherboard, I am not sure if I know what you mean, but the P35 has been replaced by the P45. It would be a better choice.

Ah, that'd be great, thanks.

I didn't know the motherboard had been replaced, all I meant was that I have the P35 in my current computer (I think.. It's hard to tell, Dell don't give you choice with motherboard.. at least not on their non-gaming series's)

I just need a quick computer and a lot of space, (hence the 250GB, and 750GB)

Thanks again fo all your help, Ollie.
