Default Dell Inspiron fails to recongnise ac adapter

Hi, can anyone advise: I recently blew up the dc input circuitry on my Inspiron 9300 laptop by accidentally reverse wiring it, so now the motherboard does not work off the mains or charge the battery...

I replaced the motherboard with a 'refurbished' one and my now corrctly re-wired psu will charge the battery and power up the new motherboard/laptop. I also bought a another psu (again off ebay!), but this psu , another genuine Dell psu is not recognised by the motherboard and gives me the error message: " the ac adapter is not recognised " or words to that effect. Anyone seen this before or have I got a duff psu ?

Sounds like a duff psu, I was given a Dell inspiron 8600 as payment for fixing someones computer last week and I had that problem, I found the problem was that there is 3 wires that connect to the adaptor and 1 had broken off, the 1 that goes to the central pin in the adaptor to be precise, that seems to be the one that provides the positive line to charge the battery and identify the psu
