Hi,
Im looking to buy a new pc, a dell, what would be a good choice as basically all i am going to be doing is watching 720p and 1080p (what size monitor do i need for best results) well i can easily settle with 720p but you know it would be nice for a bit better, maybe a bit of gaming (cod4 if possible, otherwise lego starwars :D) and just basic work and internet surfing, listening to music etc im on a budget of around £500 - £600 thanks :) will |

im curious as to how much difference would be displayed between 720p & 1080p on a 23" from about 2 meters

it depends on your tv. 1080p stands for 1920 x 1080 and 720p stands for 1280 x 720 pixels. ignore the p its not so important to know what it means just know that 1080p is better than 1080i. anyway the resolution difference is large but gets less noticeable at larger distances. but for a 23'' you wont see any difference.

ok thanks, i know what the resolutions are and what the 'p' means just was curious as what the differences are on a 23" would i be better of buying a lcd tv instead of montior, so just buy the pc without a monitor then get a tv from misco or something
EDIT: actually now that i look, tvs are probably more expensive than monitors :S i thought it was usually the other way round! |

all i would be doing really is:
on windows: 1. always have thunderbird open 2. always have firefox open 3. itunes open most of the time, minus when watching videos etc 4. working in publisher, word 5. no gaming really 6. watching 720p videos :) on ubuntu: 1.rhythmbox always open 2.thunderbird always open 3.firefox always open 4.deluge always open (i like testing different distros in virtualbox, bittorrents best for me) 5. using scribus occasionally 6. watching 720p videos :) 7. a few racing games |

Well the p means progressivly scanned. That means all the lines of the frame are displayed at the same time. When it is i, it means that the lines are interlaced. They are displayed half first, then the other half very quickly. It's fine but is not good for fast moving video. It's more complicated but that's basically it. You won't see a difference between 1080p and 720p on a 23 inch. And get a computer monitor instead because they are designed for games and such.

so do you have any suggestions as to what spec my pc should be? i like dells, but i dont know how much cheaper, if at all it would be to build one, im pretty good with PCs so i should be fine putting it together, id probably buy everything from lambdatek, they have their own online "computer builder" which is quite handy, it makes sure everything is compatable, im not sure if my dad would let me make one though, he thinks he knows everything, if not i think il go for a dell studio pretty basic with a 23" dell monitor as well and probably add a bit more ram as they charge vast amounts for it!

If you can't build one yourself just get a shop to do it.

nah ive taken my pc to bits many a time :) i love messing around with them. im not really sure what spec i need though and if i would be even allowed to do it i can just hear my dad saying "its a silly idea, its not going to work . . ." hehe
so i was thinking probably core2duo even though quad cores out as ive read that barely any applications take advantage of all 4 cores thus a more powerfull 2.66ghz (duo) vs. 2.33ghz (quad) would be a better idea. i want a 1tb hard drive for ripping my dvd collection i have 2 80gb hds. 1 for my operating system, and 1 for applications a 320gb external to cope with my music collection um 2gb of ram probably, or should i have more, i will be running either vista ultimate or windows 7 and ubuntu 9.04 (it will be out by the time i get everything) core2duo 2.66ghz ? motherboard :S need help there ati 3450 ??? just watching hi-def vids and playing a bit of cod4 and maybe cod5 would they be ok, i dont need it on the best settings? case? maybe an antec or coolmaster? psu - come with the case probably around 450w upwards dvd dl burner + my current one various fans need at least 2 pci slots (notr express) for my sb audigy se & my belkin wireless card 2 pci express card, i already have a geforce 7300 gs (i didnt realise my pc didnt have pci express *face - palm* hehehe il be probably running dual monitor setup! 17" and 23" |
