| Hello all I'm new. I've been running my Dell XPS420 for over a year now with no problems at all. I went on hols for a week in Feb and unplugged. Since return the screen randomly freezes and does not seem to be linked to any particular operation. Can happen after 5 mins or 5 hours and during any application including during browsing, game play, screensaver, word etc. Happens about 2 or 3 times a day. Screen freezes, can't bring up task manager, keyboard frozen (no lights when push caps or num lock). Only thing I can do is turn off PC. Reboots to safe mode option screen (Please bare with me. As you can see I'm not very PC literate!). If I choose to start windows normally it often boots as usual but then I can't access programmes and I get messages like "logon has failed to connect security options dialogue" and others to do with "sigmatel tray??" etc. So I shutdown and reboot. Then all OK but suddenly freezes so I switch off and go through process again. I system restored to before problem started but no change. No new installs except usual spyware Doctor and Avast updates. I'm worried that I'm causing damage by manually shutting down regularly and I've had a couple of blue screens lately and now struggles to boot up at times (blank screen with movable mouse pointer) and again I have to switch off to reboot. I've downloaded hijack this. Would a posted log help? Many thanks in advance. |

| A hijackthis log would probably help, for the malware people. You might want to check your RAM, I used to have similar problems, and it was my RAM. Use memtest. http://www.memtest.org/

| Yes, post a log. I would check Event Viewer and see if it says anything more specific about what caused the problems. It sounds like a driver/software issue. Worst case scenario, you can get rid of everything but the basics from starting up then enable them one at a time until it's fixed.

| I've checked the fan and it seems clean and working. Can run for 5 mins then freeze or 5 hours. I have however disabled spyware doctor and not had a freeze since I did this. (Nearly 2 days now). How could this be a cause? Also, can anyone tell me if the HJT log I posted indicates anything. Many thanks. |

| Check the ram whether it is heating or not, if you are aware of all the hardware of your computer components and scan the system with updated anti tools. |

| I've had no problems since I shut down spyware doctor!! Been 2 weeks now. Been on to PC tools who think it might be cos I'm running avast and spyware Dr at same time. |
