I think the most labour intensive activities I would undertake would be music production (Reason / Cubase) and usually run severaI programmes/tasks at the same time; I hate slow running machines. I would also like to be able to run with 2 monitors. Thanks in advance |

How much are you willing to spend?

I would suggest Intel over AMD for the CPU; especially if you don't want a slow running machine.

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 Patriot 4GB PC2-6400 That adds up roughly to £420. You'll need 4GB of memory for Music editing or it could leave you PC to crawl to a halt. Memory's from ARIA; very good and reputable site. The fan on the graphics card looks like it could make some noise, you may want to consider a passively cooled graphics card. I'm not sure about the PSU though. We'll Have to wait for Carbon to answer that .

I'd lose the PSU on eBay and pick up a Corsair unit.
Something like an HX520 or TX550 - Depending on how much you like modularity.

...what? Why are people recommending E7400s? Have I stepped into some time portal where we all go back to last year?
Let's try this again. OP, price this out and see if it fits under your budget. They are also worse in terms of multi-tasking performance in comparison to many Intel CPU's; whether it be Core i7 or Core 2 Duo. As you want to run the setup with 2 monitors, depending whether the monitors are the same or that both have the same output; DVI, D-Sub etc.. then you will need to invest in an adapter for the motherboard. By the way it's an E7500.

But what makes you think the brand matters at all? What does "AMD" have as a coherent brand that outweighs the difference in architectures? "AMD" and "Intel" as titles literally mean nothing as far as how the chips perform - while Intel may have had better CPUs for a while, they don't anymore, and AMD is beating Intel at every point under the price of the i5. Even the X2 240, which is currently half the price of the E7500 in the US, is up to par with it, whereas the X3 720 meets or exceeds the performance of the E8400 with an extra core.
Saying "Oh, I really liked Athlon XP" or "I didn't like Pentium 4" or "I thought that the Athlon 6000+ was garbage" makes sense, but blanket brand statements don't, really.
