Hi this is my first post so let’s see how it goes,

This summer my dad told me he wanted to be able to sit in the living room and use his TV to go on the internet check his emails and play music and stuff, basically have full control over his pc that upstairs in the spear room. So initially i thought of a wireless KVM(with audio ) sender /receiver but only really found 1 and it was $700.

So my question to you is, could you recommend a reasonable way of having full control of the pc from another room?

Regards
Stabbie

First idea that springs to mind would be to have a KVM, just a cheap basic one for mouse keyboard and screen/sound, then run the second set of cables to the living room. Stick a TV, wireless keyboard and mouse on the end and presto. I'm sure you can get video and other leads in any length from Maplin and suchlike.

Or just a wireless multimedia keyboard (incl.'s a trackpad or wiggly mouse type device - don't know what you call it! ) and a long video and audio leads down to the TV.

Should come out well under $700

Maybe $45 on leads - dependant on quality of course, and I got my multimedia combi for £30, about $37 ish?

It's a Genius Luxemate 810 if you fancy taking a look.

So even if you used decent quality HDMI, it shouldn't go much over $100.

you could probably link up an old PC to the tv and do remote desktop to the pc upstairs, or just run what ever you want on that PC. Hell you could probably build a new one for under $700 (even thought your in the UK?)

could you not use a pc directly linked to the tv, sitting next to it? no need for laying cables then.

There are wireless senders for audio and video only, maybe use one of those, with fordys idea of the wireless keyboard + trackpad?

I have a Keysonic wireless keyboard and it's very limited, also it's directional ..... certainly wouldn't work from downstairs to upstairs.

Trouble is it's not that simple.

Video transmission results in a delay, and with a combination of audio, digital signale (mouse/keyboard) and video, it could result in a very confusing operation.

But if you only wish to carry out tasks such as word processing, then it may be ok. Just note that you may not see the letters as soon as you type them.

Unless of course you could find an all in one unit to do it, but I reckon that would be more expensive if one did exist than a cheap PC next to the TV, which i then hooked up via remote desktop to the master PC upstairs - as mctw suggested.
