No computer will last you 10 years unless you really hate playing games. Do you honestly think a PC from 1998 would be useful for anything other than word processing today? Good luck playing Far Cry 2 on your Geforce 256.

speaking of not buying the Q6600, a friend made a mock up of a system I should buy. 3 guesses for the processor..

I've looked into a few things on a few websites and found some good deals on the E8500 and a Q8XXX I cant quite remember. I'll have a look once the January sales are on, might get a bargain. Birthdays in Jan are great! =D Any reason why a 2.33GHz quad would be rubbish?

it's a quad? a 3GHz Dual would beat a 2.33GHz Quad in almost everything other than video encoding etc, and costs alot less.

looks like I'll be going with dual core unless a huge offer comes now Core I7 are out! So is the E8500 reccommended earlier one of the best then?

Yes.

No offence, but if your friend is recommending a Q6600 he is very behind the times so to speak.

haha, non taken. He has one in his PC and would defend it to the hills. Dont blame him its probably a decent processor, better than my P4, but I'd prefer something more current

Yea, the Q6600 is better than a P4, and was, at one time, about the best CPU you could get, however with the 45nm CPU's it is easily beaten.

Just about anything is better than a P4 lol. 4.8GHz ftw!

So if the manufacturing process is smaller then the processors tend to be better? I think my P4's on 90Nm and thats beaten by just about anything haha. So I'm looking for something in 45Nm with a decent clock speed and more than 1 core?

Die shrinks mean less heat and less power usage, and tend to correspond to better overclocking. That's why you never saw any 65nm Conroes clocked at 3ghz out of the box.

Ahh, thats quite handy to know.

I assume yours is overclocked then? not looked at the E6400 stock clock speed..
