Hi all,
so i'm learning every day at the moment browsing this forum writing down terms and ....ehhh...acronyms and looking them up in wiki and google pics .

But, however, i'd like to add some more efficiency to it:
do you know of any web sites that explain the basics of hardware?
I don't want to spend money on "...for Dummies"-books.

It's an interesting notion. The site would change every month, that's how fast the advice changes. - ignore that, I'd mis-read your post, I thought you were looking for a "What to spend money on for Dummies".

So, a Computer Hardware 101 which at least knows about 2007 instead of just up to 1990, that'd be a good find. I'll keep my eyes open.

I'll tell you what, a Buying The Right Computer Hardware HowTo would be useful as well and I've not seen one of those either.

very good point

when this site gets articles going etc, maybe we could get a few articles illustrated, from advanced to simple, like installing ram etc

daves most likely already thought about it, but like sandra i tend to prefer illustrated tutorials

How Computers Work: By Ron White and Timothy Edward Downs.
  • Paperback: 464 pages
  • Publisher: QUE; 9 edition (29 Nov 2007)
  • Language English
  • ISBN-10: 0789736136
  • ISBN-13: 978-0789736130
I got the Millenium edition of that one which came out way back in 2000 when I had my first IT job. Was highly recommended by one of the trainers so I followed his advise and went out to buy the book. Comes with very nice diagrams and illustrations. Also, the accompanying CD has got diagrams where they show data flows, etc... I've learned a lot about computers to start off with and I woul recommend the series to anyone looking for a startoff point. Much better than the overrated Dummies books.

It won't teach you how to build a computer, but once you know how it fits together and what happens inside, you will have enough information to start building your own rig and have potential leads as to where to start looking when trouble occurs.

The details of the book above are from the lates one (29 Nov 2007) so it should be fairly up to dat.

Also, I agree about the illustrated articles. I got my new rig open at the moment to tweak it a little further so it's the ideal time to start taking some pictures. I've alos just finished my firts two laptop repairs. Maybe it needs some documenting as well.

Cheers:
Chris.
