OK, so I have 2 questions:

1) What is the best book that's widely available that teaches you in depth how to build a PC, but also talks you through the basics? It must also have other things such as troubleshooting problems etc etc.

2) When I'm getting a PC repair kit (wristband, torch, screwdrivers etc) is there any brand I should look out for? Or will any toolkit do?

I have not found any books on how to do it that are updated, look at TechReport's guides but there's no substitute for experience.

You don't really need a kit, most people just put together their own and usually it consists of a magnetic screwdriver and some lunch. You will not have to do any soldering on desktop repair, you may for DC jack repair on a laptop. A screwdriver will do for 99% of jobs.
