so when i turn my computer on, I hear this click and then the sound of something beginning to run, then another click and the same something beginning to run sound... and it goes on like this forever. just constant clicks. I can't even turn the computer off after this by pressing the power button. I have to flip the switch in the back of the power supply.

I am guessing it's a power supply problem but wanted to check with some experts before i spend the time replacing stuff.

thanks.

If it's a click, it's probably the hard drive. Hitting the power button won't turn the computer off, you need to hold it down for a few seconds on almost all computers manufactured after 2000 or so.

yeah, i mean i pushed the power button and held and nothing happened.

i switched the hard drive with another one. and now i still hear the start/stop sounds. it starts running and then stops, then starts, and stops. no clicks though. but i still can't get to windows or anything really.

Did you hold the power button for atleast 8 seconds?

i just tried to hold the power down for like 20-30 seconds and it wouldnt turn off.

i also switched the hard drive to a third one and this time i do hear the clicks. Like the other two, I hear the same start/stop sound and I never enter windows or anything for that matter.

so i'm guessing it's not the hard drive? since i tried three, and computer didnt work with any. what else could it be?

i built this computer 6-7 years ago so I think I should build a new one regardless but I'd really like to figure out exactly what the problem is.

When you say you switched the hard drive with another one .... explain in more detail ..... i.e. did you try to install Windows or ???

i have three hard drives.

1. My 'current' one has XP on it. It is the one that was in the computer when I recently have problems.

I have two old ones that I keep around just in case...
1. has windows XP. Is from like 6 years ago.
2. has windows XP. is from like 3-4 years ago.

These harder drives were used on older comps in the house that were replaced but I kept the drives.

I didnt try to install anything on them now. I just connected them to see if computer would start.
