| Krill: Tilting at Windmills is a literary reference derived from the 1605 classic "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha" written by Spanish author, Miguel de Cervantes. Now usually reffered to as simply "Don Quixote" it is widely regarded as the most influential work to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age. It is considered one of the greatest works of fiction ever published. The novel recounts the exploits of would-be knight 'Don Quixote' and his loyal servant Sancho Panza who propose to fight injustice through chivalry. It is considered one of the major literary masterpieces and remains a best seller in numerous translations. In the book, which also gives us the adjective quixotic (striving for visionary ideals), the eponymous hero imagines himself to be fighting giants when he attacks windmills. Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that plain. And no sooner did Don Quixote see them that he said to his squire, "Fortune is guiding our affairs better than we ourselves could have wished. Do you see over yonder, friend Sancho, thirty or forty hulking giants? I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war and the removal of so foul a brood from off the face of the earth is a service God will bless." |

| CPU: i7 D0(You will probably do well with a C0 but D0 more often overclocks higher). You will have to look on eBay and eslewhere though as online retailers rarely if ever guarantee the stepping of the CPU. Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD4P(There are cheaper boards and more expensive boards, this bord should do well with overclocking and isnt the priciest) This board also supports crossfire in case you want to add another 4890 at a later stage. RAM: 6GB DDR3-1066 Look for stuff with lifetime warranty and extended voltage protection(EVP).That would be most of the big names. HDD: SSDs are getting cheaper but the ones getting cheaper are the MLC versions the faster SLC are what you will want to get the best.IMO both are still too expensive. All up to you though. HSF: Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme Case: I am reluctant to recommend my own case(the Antec 1200) but what the hell! I bought it becasue of its size and superior cooling but to be honest the biggest factor was all the dust filters.I smoke alot and my PC is beside me so dust filters were a must. PSU: Corsair 620HX(enough according to Carbon.) GPU: ATi 4890 Sound card: I wouldnt bother motherboard supports Dolby Home Theater audio anyway(I am anti soundcard though because I think its a waste of money but again thats up to you to decide). |

| Dust filters, I might add, that qualify as a feature because the case that this is plus a few hundred dollars, the 900, had nothing to speak of in that respect besides 'having motherboard screwholes'. If you enjoy huge metal boxes with LEDs, the 1200 is for you. Suggesting a i7 but dismissing a sound card or a SSD as "too expensive" is great. Consumer SSDs are even somewhat cost-effective if you ignore capacity (much less on a $5000 AUD budget) and since random reads/writes are one of the main reasons people believe their computer is 'slow', one would provide much more of a boost to both desktop and gaming usage than a whopping 200mhz increase in clock speed. Ridiculous.

| Is that it? You dont like LEDs thats your problem? ![]() I said SSDs were to expnesive IMO .You think its worth it?Good for you. That motherboard and CPU combo will be far more than 200Mhz difference aswell. Something Im sure you know but blatantly refuse to acknowledge. I think your problem Carbon is that refuse to deviate from your own lame attempt at recommended builds(I am referring to your guide from page 1). Anyway Im done speaking with you as I said earlier. I will reply to the OP as best I can but you will be completely ignored. Cheers. |

| I'd agree with that.

Especially on this monster budget. Too often people disregard sound cards, saying that these days onboard ones have reached a standard comparable to seperate cards. What they fail to realise/acknowledge is that much like motherboard sound capability's, sound cards have also progressed astonishingly far in the last 5 years. With this kind of budget, and particularly for any HTPC, Gaming or even a Workstation build, if the worker is working on music, a sound card is not something to miss out. My System: FordyPC

| Hell, that's an easy one Danny. If you just want to burn 6 grand, I can tell answer it as well. Since we aren't worried about real world application purposes, just "bragging rights" Let's do it RIGHT, (since Krill wimped out on you): CPU: $999 (i7 975) Mobo: $569 (EVGA X58 SLI Hydro Copper) GPU(X2): $1419.99 (2-nVidia Hydro Copper GTX-295'S) RAM(X2): $2399.98 (2- Kingston HyperX 12 GB's, 3X4GB's, DDR3 1600 for a total of 24 GB's) HDD(X3): $689.97 (3- 300GB 10,000 RPM Velociraptors for that cool 3 way RAID stuff) PSU: $349.99 (Thermaltake 1200W) Case: $499.99 (wicked cool pyramid looking thing) BluRay Burner: $249.99 Grand Total: $7199.88 Yeah, it's $1199.88 over budget, but lets be honest here shall we? If you have 6 grand to drop on a computer, you have 7200. Don't try BS me, I have cash too and 1200 is just a couple or three missed dinners out at a nice restaurant. But if you ARE serious about the 6 grand, drop one of the sets of RAM and just make do with 12 GB's until you can afford the other 12. It won't run as well as with the full 24 GB's nor will you impress as many people, but we all have to make our little sacrifices at times, that brings the price down to $5999.89. EDIT: If you have to get an OS in that 6 grand and don't want the free 64 bit Win7 RC then you can also use this case ($299.99) instead. It's got lot's of pretty lights and a butt load of fans, but it doesn't look as unique or cool as the other one.......... but the $200 savings will buy Vista 64. EDIT2: I didn't add a sound card because Soundblasters don't work with Vista correctly and I don't know of any others. Besides, the onboard is good. |

| Hey, Bubba, come on. Who's going to be impressed by that "noob" setup? Haven't you heard? All the pro gamers use these iClear Video Signal Reduction Cards in SLI mode. In addition, it's almost a requirement to buy a few NZXT SEN-001LX Sentry LX Aluminum dual bay fan controllers. Four or five should be sufficient, I guess.
