When I changed to Tiscali Broadband, I received a modem to use which is fine except I already have a modem installed in my PC. Is it possible to use that one instead of having an extra piece of litter on my desk?

Yes you can, contact Tiscali Broadband and let them know that you have your own modem and you need them to set up your connection with that modem. They will probably tell you that they can't but they can. Most ISPs provide a modem solely because they charge a monthly fee for the equipment.

The modem in your machine likely is not a broadband modem, but a regular phone modem.I'm not aware that machines ship with broadband modems. So what you likely have on your desk is a MUCH faster version of what you have in your machine and, I might add, designed for a different connection (likely) than what you have in your machine, if it's a cable modem.
