Default HELP on This Newly Built Computer! Very Tricky Prob...

Hi,

I am hoping you can help. Had a computer die on me a little while ago, & thought I would build a computer for a change. Limit was $400.00 and with the rebates, then would have been able to beat that. But due to prob.s with the build, & my level of knowledge, all rebates have expired - oh well.

THE PROBLEM
( Note board only has 1 IDE plug)

I put everything together: MB light and case cpu fan goes on.
HD ( IDE) and CD/DVD configured to Master and Slave. Neither would turn on if the IDE cable is plugged in. Tried 3 diff cables with appropriate ends for master & slave ( I do not have SATA anything). Still no signal from MB to monitor - monitor stays blank like nothing is connected to it. Tried 3 monitors

Completely removed HD, CD/DVD – still no signal to monitor.
(From what I understand, just to see bios, I do not need the HD. - I just want to see signal to computer!)

Bare minimum to see bios is MB, RAM (?), PS, CPU, monitor.

Did the below with no positive results

Replaced MB
- with identical results, no signal; on monitor, HD - CD/DVD will not run with IDE cable .( I do not have a SATA HD)

Replaced RAM

Exchanged PS from other computers here.
( Just to make sure is ok to do, unplugged PS connector to MB from extra running computer, and plugged it into MB of troublesome MB)

Did not replace CPU, was trying to avoid that. Do not have one lying around, am very hesitant to remove processors from other home computers.

Guessing I will have to take this to a local fix shop just to plug in a CPU to confirm the MB is again not bad - or CPU is bad. fix shop is ~ $80/hr.

I want to avoid that hoping someone here can help

Anyone have this prob?

I read the cons on newegg site for the MB, few had trouble, but some said the MB “would not post”: - what does that mean?

Also some said they had to reset the MB, I have to look into how to do that ( with power on/off?).

Contacted the MB company, they said to replace everything, which I did but the CPU

Hope you can give some insight!!!!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

POST stands for ... something, basically it's a test that is carried out to verify everything is as it should be, you have connected what needs to be and its all working.

I had the same problem before and it was my RAM, I had ECC RAM where my motherboard would only support non-ECC.

The other thing to look at would be your graphics card.

Yes, I thought it was the RAM also, I replaced both RAMs listed above with another make and got the same result.

Even though I did buy a graphics card, I did not install it yet.
The MB has its' own graphics

Thanks for your reply.

I will check the ECC labelled RAM part.

POST: Power On Self Test.

It's going to be best to test your components 1 by 1 in a compatible system, assuming you have one. You can find out the broken bit, send that back.

There was a recent post here where the guy plugged in the monitor cable to his onboard graphics port while he had a graphics card in. Make sure you're not doing that.

What PSU have you got? Might not be enough for a new system.

Listed above, I have a 600W PS - unfortuantely I do not have the chance at that prob as I did not install the graphics card yet

Is a bummer that my other 2 computers do not have the same RAM config, so I cant test that. Only thing I could test was the PS.

I would love to order an identical CPU, & if that did not solve the prob, send it back to get money back, but cant do that, at least with newegg.- understandably

Thanks for your help also, I appreciate your time

What brand is your PSU? If it's a poor quality unit then it could be 4000W and still not do you any favours..

have you taken this thing out and tested it out of the case yet

i'd hate to see someone go to all this trouble because they forgot to put in brass standoffs or something.

That is an interesting thought, I have not done that, but did put in the brass standoffs that came with the board..............
