Well ... it's generally accepted that Enermax are amogst the best, but you will probably not find a 400w model for under £50. I guess it depends on how old and how treasured your system is

Yeah Enermax make some nice PSU's

But they are probably overdoing it for a normal PC.

I also like the Thermaltake line and sometimes Corsairs.

just taken a PRO-Vswitching power supply Mod: CWT-300ATX12 (PFC) out of my old computer. Only 300W but thought I'd give it a try just to prove system and if OK then buy an upgraded one as already discussed - your thoughts please.

Yep .... sounds a good idea to me. At least it will prove or eliminate the PSU.

Well that was a good idea while it lasted - for some reason the PSU I removed from my old computer is as dead as a dodo grrrrrr!

Yep try that, if no, go for a decent replacement one. Just dont connect anything you dont need to test, just the hd mobo and dvd and anything else needed for you to test it and it should be alright.
