Default how to network

Hello
I need some help in the form of an idiots guide for me to network 2 computers. I know they both need to be connected via a network card and cable and that’s all I no. once these are connected I would like lets say PC2 to be able to access and use files, documents on PC1, but I would not want PC2 to be able to access my sage programme and other private documents is this possible, how do I do it

What you are suggesting is ok with either XP or Vista.

As you say, you will need a Network Card in each PC and a crossover cable (not normal patch) to connect the two.

You can set up File Sharing on each of the PCs and share any folders/files you choose.

If you are using XP, you need to run the Network wizard on each PC, to set up a Small Office/Home Network.

If you want these computers to also have internet access the best bet would be to purchase a router.

Yep .... a router would be ideal .... this way the main PC does not have to be switched on for the 2nd PC to accees the internet.
