If it shuts down when the power button is pressed that means it's not getting into an OS. That paired with no display would usually indicate motherboard failure - video card failure would allow it to get into the OS but would have no picture, HDD failure wouldn't allow it to get into the OS but would have a picture, and CPU failure is exceptionally rare.

thanks carbon!
i got the cover off and tried to power it on. i see the blue flash behind the power button but does not stay on. there also is a green light on the ps. it is on when plugged in, then goes off when power button is pushed. it seems like it is shorting somewhere, power switch maybe? fan on ps does not even go on, so i thought was ps. but now i do think that the ps needs signal back from mother to turn on.
suggestions anyone else?

Yeah, starting to look more like motherboard still. You might disconnect the power switch lead and then bridge those two pins with a screwdriver to try to start the machine - if there's a problem with the physical switch, that'll bypass it.

I seen that problem on many HP laptops - it always was a faulty GPU on motherboards. Try to take MOBO out of the case and see what it does whe you power it up :)
