My friend has just been into Comet and bought an HP Pavillion Desktop PC A6115.
It apparently came with one month free dial-up on AOL which she intended to use to initially get online and then was going to organise a broadband package. However when we try to connect it is coming up with 'No Dial-up Modem detected'.
Are we being really stupid? I'm no expert on PC's but have looked in the control panel and on the 'phones and modems' icons if you go into modem there is none listed as installed. Has she been sold a duff one?

if there is actually a modem present in the computer it may not be installed, if so it should be covered by the warranty and you should get it fixed for free.

if it turns out there is no modem installed it wouldnt be worth getting a new one so just order a broadband package over the phone or something and you wont need the dial up modem

Thanks Spencer....Think she is going to go the broadband way now anyway. Seems very poor though that they sold her a pc with one month's free dial-up but no modem. If it was me I'd want to take it back.

If there was no modem fitted where did she plug in her phone line?

There was a phone socket on the back so does that mean there is a modem and it's just not set up?

As far as I know that socket is not used for anything else. That should mean that there is a modem fitted.

So, I've gone into the control panel and in the modem bit there's nothing there. If I try to add hardware it's looking for a plug and play device. Is there anything else I can do?

On Comet's listing for that computer there is no mention of a modem. Where exactly on the back is that socket?

Can't remember exactly. She set it all up and I just went round a few days ago to see if I could sort it out for her..(blind leading the blind?)!!
Somewhere near the middle possibly?

Is it an Ethernet socket being mistaken as a modem socket?
