the message is "disk read error, press ctrl+alt+del to boot", it after booting it will dispplay the message again.

Sounds like the hard drive is on the way out.

Only real way of checking is by putting it in another machine and running windows disk checker on it.

Yep ..... it does sound that way. If you have had the case apart recently, check the connections to the drive and the motherboard are not loose.

If you have an XP CD you can boot from it and run

chkdsk /f

from the recovery console. I agree with the others, though, the disk is starting to fail probably. Replace it ASAP.
