see if you can wrap your heads around this:
my problem is that there is one person in my house who, whenever they turn on their pc: they knock everyone else in the house offline and it requires a reboot of the router before any of us can get back online the router is in my room, i have 2 pc's in here and there is a also wireless laptop running from the router the offending user has 1 pc in his room i got so pi**ed off that i took away his switch he was using to see if that was the problem: it wasn't so i revoked his internet privileges completely and unplugged the cable from the router into the cat5 socket, so only myself and the wireless laptop user could connect here is where it gets unbelievable: whenever he turns his pc on, it still knocks us all offline, exactly the same, even though he is not connected to the router!!! (his pc has no wireless device to the best of my knowledge and even if it did i don't allow it to connect) i have tried it with no internet cable in his pc: the same, i tried it with no internet cable even in his room: the same what the hell's going on? this seems impossible to me we all run xp btw |

Haha wow I've never heard of anything like that happening before. My best guess would be that the problem is in the wall's circuit.
Try plugging different things into where his PC is plugged to, and try plugging his PC in elsewhere. It might be that he's overflowing the circuit and for some odd reason it's only affecting the router as far as you know. I'm no expert on this kinda stuff, so it's possible that I'm completely wrong, but like I said it would be my best guess. |

I agree with zodiac, you've ruled out all options that connect the PCs/laptops together apart from the power itself. Turning on that particular PC might cause a power drop or surge sufficient to screw with the router.
Ive never heard of anything interfering like that, but still, its the only logical explanation i can come up with! |

Can you clarify whether you mean:
A) The other computers disconnect form network, but remain powered on. B) All other computers power off completely.

I'm pretty sure he means the network. "they knock everyone else in the house offline and it requires a reboot of the router before any of us can get back online"

The dude is just psycho, I mean psychic, (the roommate, not buchanan), and when he gets near his computer, his brain waves start making things go haywire. I'd make him wear a tinfoil hat at all times when he is in the house, hell, maybe even in the yard. Being the helpful sort I have linked two sites which will show how to make such headgear. The second one is a video.......

LOL Bubba!
And Zodiac, yeah I thought so to at first, but then if its not connected to the network, that's just way too odd. But I can understand the others powering off, that could be bad circuitry. I have to have my top floor fire alarm disconnected, because if it's plugged in, and you turn on any downstairs lighting, it will go off, and take all the others with it. Then the neighbours kill me ![]() So an electricians finally coming to rip out all the wiring and refit it all. Could be a similar instance here, have a professional in to take a look if it is a power issue.

I'm sorry but that is just nonsense. Laptops are not radioactive.
I think someone's playing silly games with you...

Yes, I think that is actually the only reasonable explanation, if it is only kicking you off the network. However what I said before still stands if it actually turns off all your other PC's. Here's something you could try, when he's out, turn is PC on, see if it has the same affect.

all other computers remain on and functional but cannot get online/connect to internet without a reboot of router (switch power off at the wall and back on again) and sometimes a reboot of one or more of my computers (in my room) themselves.
