Hi insominia
How do you mean it wouldn't be able to play the newer games for very long?
I am completely clueless when it comes to video cards, but i'm not the sort of person that would run out and buy the newest game, I usually wait until it dies down a bit.
Would it play games like half life 2 on full detail or battlefield 2142?

Yes, but with a little difficulty. Games such as the revolutionary Crysis, Oblivion, Call of Duty 4 etc would run reasonably well on an 8800GTS, but you wouldn't be playing very smoothly.

If you searched around, bargained, and built yourself, you would be able to get a PC with identical specs for probably 100-300 pounds cheaper.

Just have a quick search around on Google at the differences between Nvidia's (or ATi's) graphics card range. Find out how well they run your favourite games and then take it from there.

hey mate
yer I know what your saying, i guess I don't feel confident enough to build a computer from scratch. My understandings are in mechanics and cars, but not computers and so if it will play the new games, even on say medium quality then that's great, but I know that if I build it myself I will have a lot of heartache and god forbid break something!
Do you know of any similiar pre-built rigs?

Well, I'm not 100% sure but www.digitalstormonline.com seems to have good prices and computers. I'm just not sure where they ship to... if you could find out somehow that would be great because I can't seem to find it.

It's based in california, I don't think the Americans have the same power output as us and returns would be a hassle

As for the "Ultima OC" it seems ok, but it wouldn't be able to run newer games for very long. I guess you could just pop out the GTS, sell it, and get an 8800GTX or two. With the release of Nvidia's new 9 series GPU's later this month (9800) you could expect the prices of the 8800 to fall. Or, if you're daring enough you could just get the 9800 when it comes out.
Just wondering what you base your comment "it wouldn't be able to run newer games for very long" Insomnia?

Look at the resolution quoted, and then look at the core specs of the GTS. Specifically the memory bandwidth which outs the pixels to the screen. On a bang for buck basis, let alone performance, that card is made for that resolution. Can easily game at 1920x1200 as well. I know, I had one.

Granted a core2 running at that speed would never be a limiting factor. But, frankly, this can only be a good thing.

I agree on the pricing though, when the 8900 does actually come out, but as it was slated for a September and then a November 2007 release (and it's still not out) it depends on whether or not Jack wants to wait.

Personally, the ideal card for that setup would be the 512mb 8800GT but overclockers aren't quoting it so far, also, the memory bandwidth isn't as high on the reference specs.

Jack: Regarding Overclockers. From my personal experience they're one of the best Etailers I've come across, very personable and knowledgeable people.

And shipping would probably be very pricey. Plus, I wouldn't want to ship a pre-built pc (with gpu and hdd in place) that far.

I guess I wouldn't know too much, but if you were wanting to play newer games (Call of Duty 4, Crysis) on full settings with a reasonably big monitor, the computer would end up having a little bit of trouble.

Hi guys
if they are yet to release this video card is there any chance of it having teething problems when it first comes out? Also Alex I had a further look around the site and noticed they had a gaming section of pc's some which had been marked down quite a lot, but you might have already seen this section?
It doesn't seem that they are offering anything more then the 8800GTS until you start getting to the better part of £2000
