| Hi Alex I've just noticed that computer you spec'd doesn't include a sound card! Do you have any suggestions, trying to keep costs down a bit. |

| Hi Jack. Just to save me reading the whole thread again, it was 2.1 sound you were after wasn't it?

| To be frank, I wouldn't bother with a dedicated soundcard in your instance. The chipset on the motherboard is decent enough, especially for just gaming on 2.1. Leave it as is fella.

That's interesting I always thought that any soundcard was better then an integrated one, the speakers that are in question are the Logitech X-230's |

| You're correct, generally they are. But for just putting gaming sounds through on a 2.1 it's overkill. Plus, its more expenditure. If you were going 5.1 and/or doing a lot of audio creation/editing then I'd be more inclined to suggest one.

| wow, learn something new everyday, so if i was playing bassy music or any music for that matter on any volume I wouldn't notice a huge difference? And for games would I lose any realism so to speak? |

| Regarding the first question, that's primarily speaker dependent. A crap set will sound tinny, a good set will allow decent bass and high-end. Regarding the second question; All games are encoded for 5.1 now and allow for full Doby and DTS support and sometimes EAX 2 (although vista distorts this as it doesn't allow for hardware acceleration rather it emulates it). The end result of this is that all EAX effects in Vista are disabled by default. But all of the above is game dependent anyway (and soundcard as well; Creatives X-FI doesn't support EAX 2, or Dolby prologic 2 as examples) as games will offer some of the supported audio codecs. So, to stop waffling, yes, you'll lose some surround effects as you're going 2.1.
