Default keyboard not function on logon

i am running windows xp pro sp2.
it worked perfectly fine for nearly a year now. then suddenly my keyboard packs up. so i test it and find out it's my ps2 socket busted.

i then purchase a usb converter and usb keyboard. (converter took too long to arrive. wasn't next day though i paid for next day) it worked perfectly fine for about 3 days. then it stops working at windows logon. my usb mouse won't work either. they work on other computers. and they work find until it gets to windows xp welcome screen.(log on)

i've tried repairing windows and that's had no effect whatsoever. i also tried leaving the keyboard unplugged until welcome screen.(advice from another site)

is there anything i can do to make it work? (it works on other computers) i don't want to have to reinstall windows as i have over 100GB of irreplaceable data.

if anyone can help me with this i would really appreciate it. and i have the disk i installed xp pro.
