Well I left my laptop on while i went out for about 20mins and i came back and the laptop was off and there was a strange electrical burning smell. So i unplugged the charger and left the laptop for an hour or 2 and tried to turn it on and it gets to the black screen that says windows xp just before the log in screen and then a blue screen comes up for a split second with lots of writing on it(its impossible to read what it says as it flashes on and off to fast) then it resets itself and keeps doing this over and over

If you can take the back bit off and look for any burnt marks, or just a stronger smell you may be able to figure it out
Did you try booting in safemode or can you even get that far?

Tried safemode still the same thing happened but i put in a diffrent hard drive which was from an old laptop and it came up with a blue screen with writing which im 90% sure is the same screen that flashes on and off with the original hard drive execpt the only diffrence is that the blue screen stays on until you turn it off and it says the following......
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer, Technical information: *** STOP: 0X0000007B (0xF78A6640,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000)" |

M$ say that it is HDD related HERE
But it would make no sense for both HDD's to have the same problem!
