The fan starts to spin then stops when i turn on the laptop so does that mean its connected ok?

is it an acer by the way and if its not it could be a ram problem its 90 percent likely to be ram

then it is 90 percent likely to be RAM memory its probably gone as your system needs to boot from the motherboard first so its not that and then it goes to the windows xp screen this proves that its not the hard drive as that has your operating system on. and then RAM is needed and this is not working so try and get some more RAM. just out of curiosity is it an acer laptop

If your fan does not spin all the time when the laptop is powered on then your processor will overheat. Which will cause the computer to crash. So you might have to get a new fan. You said you pulled out and switched hard drives with the same result so it's unlikely that it's the hard drive. I would start with the fan and replace it if you can. Note: in most cases if there is burning the processor will be bad also with the fan so you might have to replace both.

Its a medion laptop, and i have 2 ram cards in it. Ones a 256mb and the other is a 1gig, so surely somthing couldnt have happened to both of them at the same time. About the fan, I did notice the past few days when it was working that the fan wasnt spinning as often as it usually does as i can hear it, but if it is the fan and its fried the processor then surely it wouldnt get as far as it does?!

Right ok here's the latest update...

I bought an external hard drive case and put the hard drive from the laptop into it and it wouldn't show up when i plugged it into a different computer. I tried a different hard drive and that worked fine so the case it definetly ok. So i tried booting windows on my working computer from the hard drive from the faulty laptop in the external case and the same thing happened to the computer it came up with that error on the blue screen and reset itself. So it must be something to do with the hard drive.

So, i downloaded a operating system that runs from a cd called ubuntu or something like that and burned that (it definetly works i tried it on my other computer) and i got the laptop to boot it from the cd but then it came up with another error:

Busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3unbuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.

/bin/sh: cant access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) [ 33.860000] ata1: port failed to respond (30 secs, Status 0x80)

Dont no if that means anything to anyone

And another thing. It wont charge!! I noticed this when the low battery red light came on but i plugged in the charger and it didnt do anything? And the light on the charger which comes on to tell you the power is on was flashing(which it isnt supposed to do). So im wondering has something shorted out and fried something?? As it was plugged it and charging when it broke.

So any ideas guys? Or is it just for the scrap?
