Default leaving hardware on

Is there any problem with leaving hardware on? except the enviromental issues, except for the odd reboot my pc has stayed on for atleast 6months, i have also got an external hard drive that i never power down, would this dramatically shorten the lives of either?

With most PC hardware it will probably decrease its life span by a few years, but if you are like me you will not own a 10 year old PC anywoo

I have had more HDD's die on me from having them stored away than from having them plugged into my computer

3.5" externals are just internal hdd's in an enclosure. As such they power themselves down (the spindle and heads) after a certain amount of minutes of inactivity anyway. Basically they go into standby.
