Default Mobo's PCI-E (16x) running at 8x, compatibility and performance issues?

Hiya, Basically, i would like to know whats going on with this.

If i buy a graphics card, a pci-e one, will it be ok in my pci-e slot which runs at 8x?
Is there any noticeable difference? Will it work?

What happens to my cards performance? Will its fillrate be halved or what?

Is it effectively an AGP with a different interface and thats all?

Whats going on with it?

Ant...

Hi Antony.

Put your mind at rest fella. I've yet to see a gpu fill the bandwidth provided by a 8x socket, whether AGP or PCI-E.

PCI-E was touted as all singing all dancing upon it's release because motherboard manufacturers wanted to do away with AGP.

That's it, pure and simply.

Hi Alex correct me if I'm wrong but if you get a card designed for 16x PCI=E it won't physically fit a 8x slot. Not 100% on this but thats what I understand. If it's an 8x card it will be ok in a 16x slot just using 8 lanes of the available 16.

Hi guys, sorry was looking at it purely from a bandwidth point of view from my initial read of the post.

Your pci-e slot on the mobo is a 16x slot Antony, so I don't understand your initial post (?)

The card is a bog standard 16x pci-e card.

It'll work.

I know, it is confusing.
My mobo has a 16x slot, right?
However, it runs at 8x so even though a 16x card will fit, it will only run at max of 8x.
The card ive bought is a 16x.

Do you know what i mean?

Where did you obtain this info from Antony?

Have you checked the bios just to confirm the pci-e is set at 16x ?
